I want clients to know what the Nauru passport does not do before they pay. It does not open Europe, the UK or North America. What it does well is Asia, Oceania and part of the Caribbean and Africa. Data below is from the BRIDGES passport index of 4 October 2026 and the Program Office FAQ.

The numbers

BRIDGES counts 83 of 226 destinations without a prior visa: 52 visa-free, 8 with an electronic authorisation and 23 with a visa on arrival. That is rank 58 of 199 passports. The Program Office speaks of over 85 countries. The BRIDGES programme page shows yet another count with a different list of territories. I treat these as the same picture and always check the specific countries a client needs.

Where you need a visa

The Schengen area, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and China all require a visa in advance.

Europe. Regulation (EU) 2018/1806 lists Nauru among visa-exempt countries with a footnote: the exemption applies only from the date a visa waiver agreement with the EU enters into force. As of October 2026 a Schengen visa is needed.

United Kingdom. BRIDGES cites UK Immigration Rules change HC 1491: a visa requirement for Nauru citizens since 15:00 GMT on 9 December 2025, with electronic authorisations closed on 20 January 2026. One element on the BRIDGES programme page still labels the UK as an electronic authorisation, which contradicts this. I follow the dated rule and advise checking GOV.UK before any trip.

Validity, renewal and dual citizenship

The passport is valid for 10 years for all applicants. It is renewed through the Program Office or Nauru embassies and consulates, without an address in Nauru. Nauru allows dual citizenship. Your other country may have its own rules: for example, BRIDGES reminds Russian citizens that a second citizenship must be reported to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, generally within 60 days.

Taxes

According to BRIDGES, Nauru has no ordinary personal income tax on worldwide income and no capital gains or inheritance tax. There is a tax on employment and services on the island and a business profits tax, and Nauru exchanges data under CRS since 2018. A passport alone does not change where you pay tax: that depends on where you live. I have not checked these tax rates against a Nauru government source, so treat them as orientation.

Who it fits

People who travel mostly in Asia and the Gulf, who need a second document for banking or as a backup, and who already have their own route into Europe. For visa-free Schengen compare the Caribbean programmes.
